HomePage News presents Design Driven, a video series hosted by Tom Mirabile, founder of Springboard Futures and consumer trend analyst for the International Housewares Association and HomePage News.
In this episode, Mirabile talks to industrial designers Steve Cozzolino and Scott Henderson about how generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) is being used increasingly in design applications.
Generative AI is a technology that can be used to generate concepts and dimensional images in designing physical products. This process starts with a prompt or query in the form of text, an image or even an existing design, in the same way one might use a search engine like Google.
Unlike search engines in common use, it does not simply return existing knowledge for the user to sort through. Instead, gen AI uses various algorithms to translate responses to that query and generate new, unique representations of dimensional objects, illustrations and original product concepts.
While the complexity of generative AI currently exceeds our ability to imagine its uses, in the foreseeable future, it will help write code, develop products, redesign business processes and transform supply chains.
However, there are as many concerns as questions surrounding generative AI. Among these are its potential misuse and abuse and its potential to disrupt existing business models.
Design Driven turns to those at the vanguard of this technology’s use to help us unpack its fundamental usage and realities.
Steve Cozzolino, founder and principal of Cozzolino Studio, is an award-winning industrial designer with over 25 years of consulting experience. Steve has collaborated with Eca Zeisel and after serving as design director at Karim Rashind, Inc., Steve launched Cozzolino Studio LLC., a full-service product design, strategy and branding studio. His roster of clients includes All-Clad, Cuisinart, Johnson & Johnson, L’Oréal, Mattel, Mr. Coffee, Nambé, Oster, PepsiCo, and Anheuser Busch.
Scott Henderson is an American designer, artist, writer and curator from New York City.
