The Cookware and Bakeware Alliance (CBA) has released of a comprehensive three-part educational series on the topic of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in cookware and bakeware manufacturing.
The educational series was created to simplify the complex subject for the benefit of consumers and legislators and provide a clear and objective understanding of PFAS and PTFE to help in making informed buying and voting decisions, said the CBA.
Part 1: “Cookware, PFAS, and PTFE” delves into the distinction between non-polymeric fluorochemicals and polymeric fluoropolymers, such as PTFE, used in nonstick coatings of cookware and bakeware. It emphasizes the unique properties of fluoropolymers and the need for a science-backed approach to any legal restrictions.
Part 2: “Fluoropolymers and Human Health” demonstrates that fluoropolymers, including PTFE, do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health and are classified as low-concern polymers. It includes assessments from U.S. and European authorities affirming the safety of PTFE-coated cookware and bakeware.
Part 3: “A Closer Look at PFAS and Cookware & Bakeware” offers an in-depth examination of the lifecycle of PTFE-coated cookware and bakeware, as well as a look at current alternatives.
The CBA believes that education is a critical step in addressing the challenges and concerns associated with PFAS and PTFE in the cookware and bakeware industry.
The series is available for download on the CBA website, cookwareandbakeware.org. This material is found under the ‘Good Science‘ subsection of the ‘Resources & Solutions’ section on the CBA website.
