Walmart Supporting Employees with AI Tool

Posted In: Retail Articles

Walmart is using a new artificial intelligence application to help office employees work more efficiently.

In a post on LinkedIn Donna Morris, Walmart execution vp and, chief people officer, and co-author Cheryl Ainoa, executive vp, new businesses and emerging technologies, stated that, as the conversation around generative AI continues to grow, sparking interest about how it will reshape work, interactions, and relationships, the company believes GenAI will revolutionize the retail industry, make shopping easier and more enjoyable for consumers, and creating better work experiences for employees.

So, Walmart has launched a GenAI-powered feature called My Assistant to all campus associates in the United States. Morris and Ainoa described it as an easy-to-use desktop and mobile app experience that upgrades everything from the drafting process to creative partnerships to summarizing large documents. As such, Morris and Ainoa, noted, My Assistant has the potential to change how Walmart employees work and solve problems.

The significance of this launch extends beyond the basic benefits of GenAI, such as productivity gains. Walmart believes the key to unlocking transformation lies in employee creativity and innovation, they pointed out. Ideally, the My Assistant technology will free workers from monotonous, repetitive tasks, allowing more time and focus for improving the customer/member experience.

The debate about AI and automation, as well as its impact on the future of work, is getting a lot of attention. Walmart believes that successful implementation will help people and technology deliver on the company’s stated purpose to help people save money and live better, they noted. GenAI can help Walmart employees work faster and more efficiently, but it also has limitations, Morris and Ainoa emphasized that it lacks judgment, has a limited understanding of context and is only as good as the data it’s trained to work. Walmart needs out-of-the-box, truly brand-new thinking, they asserted

Although new to many employees, Walmart has been working with AI and its precursors for years and developed guidelines to aid associates in the responsible use of the technology. Walmart believes that opportunity exists across the enterprise to remove friction, provide a personalized interface and deliver the tools employees need, and My Assistant is one way of streamlining the associate experience with technology, Morris and Ainoa pointed out.

Walmart is providing My Assistant as part of a new Me@Campus super app, a one-stop-shop to navigate all aspects of working at the company. Employees can manage their careers, financial well-being, required learnings, teams and more work-related functions in the platform. Me@Campus also helps with new employee orientation and making benefits choices during annual enrollment. Employees can even order a coffee in the app and book a conference room for a meeting then use the integrated campus navigation to find their way around the Walmart offices.

My Assistant provides highly personalized and intuitive interactions, Morris and Ainoa maintained, and Walmart is building convenient, integrated self-service capabilities that will drive requests and help the tool live up to its name as a true assistant.
