Walmart has opened a new 2.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis in McCordsville, IN as the company continues to boost faster technology-driven distribution.
Walmart characterizes the McCordsville facility as a next-generation fulfillment center to date and will enable the retailer to fulfill more orders more quickly. It is the second of four next-generation FCs that are bringing a combination of people, technology and machine learning together to achieve faster shipping and delivery, the company stated, while increasing Walmart.com’s order fulfillment capacity.
The McCordsville facility is Walmart’s largest fulfillment center to date and is designed to expand Walmart’s next- or two-day shipping. Combined with the overall Walmart distribution network, next-generation fulfillment centers will enable the retailer to reach 95% of the U.S. population with fast-delivery services. The company’s Walmart Fulfillment Services arm will use the space to move products sold by third-party marketplace sellers.
“The McCordsville grand opening marks a major milestone in our supply chain modernization journey,” said Karisa Sprague, Walmart U.S. senior vp, fulfillment network operations, in announcing the opening. “With more customers shopping online, we leverage state-of-the-art technology to increase the speed of delivery all while creating tech-empowered career opportunities for our associates.”
