To address concerns about digital innovation’s effects, Walmart has promised to use AI conscientiously, spelling out six commitments regarding its application of artificial intelligence and other technology.
The Walmart Responsible AI Pledge centers on six commitments to responsible AI and technology use, the retailers noted, detailing them as:
- Transparency. Walmart said it would help customers, members and employees understand how the company uses data and technology, including AI, and keep them posted on what goals it sets for tech.
- Security. Advanced security measures will protect data as the company continuously reviews security practices to mitigate current and emerging threats.
- Privacy. Walmart will evaluate AI systems so that the sensitive or confidential information the company has in storage remains protected.
- Fairness. It will regularly evaluate AI tools for bias that could affect the lives of customers, members and employees.
- Accountability. AI management will be in the hands of people, with Walmart declaring that the company will hold itself accountable for the range of effects that occur from tech applications.
- Customer-centricity. Walmart will measure customer satisfaction with AI interactions and listen to feedback as it continually reviews AI tools to ensure the technology is accurate, relevant and helpful to customers.
O’Conner asserted that, although technology and shopping habits evolve, Walmart’s purpose and values remain the same, which is something reflected in the Responsible AI Pledge. Indeed, she said, the release of the pledge signals a recognition that the time has come for the company to speak out on technology and transparency. O’Conner noted that Walmart wants to be transparent and address the concerns consumers and others, including employees, may have with the rapid pace of its technological development. The company also wants to reinforce and reiterate its commitment to using technology in safe and beneficial ways.
