In a move to address sustainability and related concerns, Walmart is launching Built for Better, a program that will call out products that benefit consumers and the planet, the retailer stated.
Built for Better icons will highlight more nutritious products or those that meet independent standards that identify items made without specific materials or ingredients customers may not want. Icons also will call out products designed to help reduce negative effects on the planet for future generations with a focus on sustainably sourced and climate-conscious products.
A Walmart spokesperson told HomePage News that the Built for Better program will cover the food and beverage, household essentials, baby, beauty, apparel, home and office product categories.
In establishing Built for Better criteria, Walmart is using a variety of standards from third-party certifiers ranging from Great for You, EWG Verified, Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX to Energy Star Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified and Better Cotton Initiative.
In a blog post announcing the new program, Jane Ewing, Walmart senior vp/sustainability, noted, “We know transparency is important, so customers can learn more about the criteria and the organizations that help distinguish products in a methodology page on our site. Customers can shop Built for Better on Walmart.com and in the Walmart app and take advantage of all the same convenient pickup and delivery options we offer every day. Customers will be able to learn more about Built for Better and our sustainability work as part of a marketing campaign across multiple channels where they will be directed to the site Walmart.com/LiveBetterTomorrow.”
