The Trump administration has put its February 1 executive order squashing the China tariff exemption for ‘de minimis’ goods on hold until the Secretary of Commerce can put systems in place to process and collect the tariff revenue, according to a White House statement.
The de minimis tariff exception, which negates duties otherwise imposed on products crossing the U.S. border, applies to goods valued less than $800.
The administration described original executive order as targeting the flow of synthetic opioid shipments to the United States from China. However, online retailers with roots in China and that import heavily from China, such as Temu and Shein, would have been subject to tariffs they previously avoided.
