Americans on average plan to spend a total of $974 during the holiday shopping season in 2021, up 4.7% versus 2020, according to a survey conducted by non-profit coupons provider and charity fundraiser DealAid, with Amazon being the biggest online and Target the biggest bricks and mortar beneficiary.
With habits changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, 94.2% of consumers responding to a DealAid survey plan to shop online during the 2021 holiday shopping season with 54.7% planning to shop in-store. Consumers said a little over two-thirds of the holiday spending will take place online.
As for where to take their business, 79.4% of consumers who said they plan to shop online expect to spend most of their 2021 holiday shopping budgets at Amazon, with Walmart.com a distant second at 6.2%. A third of consumers who plan to shop in-store expect to spend most of their 2021 holiday shopping budget at Target with Walmart a close second at 30.4%.
In the survey, 54.6% of consumers who plan to shop online said they would use their mobile device to make purchases even as 66.1% of consumers who plan to shop in-store said they expected to use credit cards as their preferred payment method.
As they consider shopping for the holidays, 35.9% of consumers revealed plans to buy online and pick up in-store/curbside while 13.7% of consumers plan to use buy now pay later to finance purchases.
Prices trumped COVID-19 as the biggest concern consumers have to go into the holiday shopping season, according to the survey, although just barely. Product availability comes in a close third.
