NRF Upgrades 2021 Retail Sales Growth Forecast

Two measures of corporate responsibility have just emerged —  one from S&P Dow Jones Indices and the other from Newsweek — and they each include a roll call of retailers. Only three retailers, however, are on both: Lowe’s Cos. Best Buy and Gap.

The two social responsibility listings have somewhat different constituencies, one including the United States and Canada the other strictly the U.S. Also, it should be noted that the 500 company-long Newsweek list is a bit more than three times the length of the S&P Dow Jones Indices list.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index applies a transparent, rules-based constituent selection process based on the companies’ S&P Global ESG Score resulting from the annual S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. The CSA consists of a rigorous questionnaire assessing both public and non-public data submitted by participating companies. This year, more than 10,000 publicly traded companies were invited to participate in the S&P Global CSA, S&P Dow Jones maintained.

According to Newsweek, the rankings focus on a holistic view of corporate responsibility that considers the three pillars of ESG: environment, social and corporate governance. The analysis is based on two metrics: quantitative data from Koester Performance Research and the corporate social responsibility reputation of each company derived from an extensive survey among U.S. residents.
