Parks Associates reported that, for the first time, online retailers dominate as the top channel for the most widely adopted smart home devices, including garage door openers, smoke or CO detectors, thermostats, door locks, video doorbells, networked cameras, in-wall outlets/switches, light bulbs and plugs.
Parks Associates’ survey of 10,000- U.S. broadband household revealed more than one-third of those households own at least one smart home device. Parks’ report on “Smart Home: Consumer Purchases and Preferences” indicated that in 2020 the average number of devices owned per household with at least one smart home device rose from 6.8 to 7.4 as buyers added products from new categories or expanded existing platforms.
Purchasers used a wider variety of channels than ever before, according to the Parks report. One-fourth of households with the most widely adopted devices reported they purchased through an online-only retailer, such as Amazon. National retailers and local retailers were the next most likely source with product manufacturers in third position, followed security dealers and broadband service provider.
Doorbells and light bulbs were favorite smart home products in 2020.
