Refurbished items seller Poshmark has announced the second annual Secondhand Sunday, the only national retail event dedicated to supporting secondhand sellers and circular fashion during the peak holiday shopping season.
Secondhand Sunday, this year held on November 26, is another initiative developed to redirect shoppers away from mass consumption and toward the purchase of pre-owned goods, supporting environmental sustainability and the livelihoods of individual sellers, Poshmark stated. Poshmark is launching live shopping events powered by the company’s Posh Shows to pave the way for and enliven Secondhand Sunday this year. They will encourage holiday shoppers to check out secondhand goods for their gift-giving needs. The shows include the Gifts Galore Posh Show: Unwrapping 2023 Holiday Trends on November 16, which will allow shoppers to bid on coveted items auctioned at low starting prices. All proceeds from the show will go to Veritree to fund restoration projects that contribute to environmental sustainability. On November 19 and 26, Postmark will launch the Upcycling Posh Shows With ShopGoodwill.com. The retailer is working with ShopGoodwill.com, the first and largest e-commerce auction platform created and operated by a nonprofit, to support its #CreateOpportunity campaign, Poshmark noted. On the two dates, creators will demonstrate how to upcycle one-of-a-kind items purchased from ShopGoodwill.com and sell their unique, giftable handmade products live. Poshmark plans to donate 10% of net proceeds from each show back to ShopGoodwill.com, it maintained.
On Secondhand Sunday itself, Poshmark will launch a series of gifting shows focused on men, women and kids. For each purchase made during a Posh Show on Secondhand Sunday, Poshmark will contribute $1 to its partnership with Veritree, which funds tree-planting projects in the U.S. and Canada, up to $10,000
To encourage sellers to source and list trendy items for holiday shoppers, and festive decor already is abundant on the site, Poshmark is offering a $50,000 listing challenge. Any seller who lists a new item on Poshmark between now and November 19 can win a $10,000 cash prize.
“When we introduced Secondhand Sunday last year, our goal was not just to create a moment, but a movement encouraging people to think differently about shopping secondhand during the holidays,” said Manish Chandra, Poshmark founder and CEO, in announcing the promotion. “More people than ever turned to second-hand gifting, and this year, we are combining the impact of shopping secondhand with the magic and human connection of shopping live, creating an entirely new Secondhand Sunday experience for our community. Posh Shows has transformed the shopping experience on Poshmark, with shoppers spending over 70 million minutes watching Posh Shows last month alone, and we’re excited to bring that addictive, fun live experience to holiday shoppers this year.”
