Store Traffic Metrics Hint at Upcoming Retail Financial Results

NRF Upgrades 2021 Retail Forecast After Strong First Half

A range of retailers are preparing to release financial numbers during the next couple of weeks, and Placer.ai has compiled a list of their recent shopper traffic metrics that could provide a glimpse into the forthcoming results.

The Placer.ai traffic tracker has thrown a spotlight on the brick-and-mortar popularity of major retailers as a means of providing a sense of how a critical component of those operations has performed recently.

Listed by financial reporting dates, here are some recent retailer traffic results, as characterized by Placer.ai: 

May 14

  • Store visits to The Home Depot slipped 1.1% year-over-year during the first quarter, with shopper traffic down 2.4% in April, up 1% in March and down 0.3% in February.

May 16

  • First-quarter store visits to Walmart were up 3.9% year-over-year and up 6.1% at Sam’s Club. Walmart’s year-over-year shopper traffic was down 2.7% in April, up 7.7% in March, and up 4.4% in February and Sam’s Club’s shopper traffic was up 1.9% in April, up 8.2% in March, and up 6.9% in February.
  • Store visits to Lowe’s during the first quarter slid 4% year-over-year, with shopper traffic up 0.2% in April, down 1.1% in March and down 2.8% in February.

May 22

  • At Target Corp., store visits were up 3.5% year-over-year, with shopper traffic up 1.4% in April, up 6.3% in March and up 5.3% in February.
  • Across the TJX Cos. operation, store visits at Homesense were up 9.9% year-over-year during the first quarter, and visits at HomeGoods were down 1.6%. Store visits at T.J. Maxx were up 8.9% and those at Marshalls were up 7.9%. The most recent monthly shopper traffic data shows shopper traffic in April was down 1.3% at Homesense, down 2.8% at HomeGoods, up 2.7% at T.J. Maxx and up 1.9% at Marshalls.

May 23

  • First-quarter store visits at BJ’s Wholesale Club were up 5.6% year-over-year, with shopper traffic up 0.4% in April, up 9.5% in March and up 8.3% in February.
  • In the case of Ross Stores, store visits were up 1.1% year-over-year during Q1, with shopper traffic down 6.9% in April, up 0.8% in March and up 1.2% in February.

May 30

  • In its third quarter, Costco Warehouse Club shopper traffic was up 9.2% in April, 10.5% in March and 10.9% in February year over year.
  • Shopper traffic at Dollar General Corp. was up 17.4% year-over-year during March, up 14.6% in February and up 5.9% in January.

Two retailers reviewed by Placer.ai that had not announced the dates of their financial releases were Burlington Stores and Dollar Tree.  Burlington shopper traffic was up 1% in April, up 10.5% in March and up 8.7% in February.  Store traffic at Dollar General namesake outlets was up 16.8% in March, up 14.9% in February and up 4.7% in January year-over-year; and shopper traffic at Family Dollar was up 8.4% in March, up 6.5% in February and down 2% in January.
