Numerator: March Promo Gain Led by Digital Temporary Price Cuts

The Numerator Promo Shift Dashboard, providing a determination of promotional landscape on a monthly basis, indicated March was a busy month for retail discounting, with the grocery sector leading in temporary online discounts.

According to Numerator, overall promotion volume was up 15% in March versus March of 2023. Web promotions, which accounted for almost three-quarters of the overall volume, gained 26.4% year over year, while physical promotions slipped 9.8% year over year.

The volume of temporary price reductions, short-term digital bargains versus circular, weekly ad, press-run or coupon-book promotions, was up 72% year over year in March, according to Numerator. Top retailers using digital TPRs in March 2024 were Jewel-Osco, Acme Markets, Albertsons, Meijer, and Safeway. National brands continue to drive the bulk of promotion volume, accounting for 86% of all deal ad blocks in March, Numerator reported.
