Although rough and cool weather in major markets across much of the United States this spring might have put plans back a few weeks, consumers are preparing their outdoor spaces for the warmer months while also considering home improvement projects at a time when they may be spending more time close to home, according to market researcher Numerator.
With spring unfolding, 63% of consumers plan to take on lawn/garden work this spring, Numerator noted, and 51% plan to purchase lawn supplies.
As was the case during the Great Recession, consumers are turning to make incremental improvements and fix-ups at a time of economic uncertainty. The most common reasons for recent home improvement purchases, Numerator noted, were to begin a small DIY project, at 29%; and the need to replace a damaged/broken item, at 24%.
When it comes to home improvement projects, in-store shopping continues to reign supreme. Through the 2023 first quarter, in-store shopping penetration was 87% versus 32% online, according to Numerator.
As for promotions in the do-it-yourself channel, categories seeing increased market support so far this year are Major Appliances, Power Tools and Cleaning Tools, according to Numerator. In contrast, Hand Tools, Kitchen & Bath Fixtures, Lawn & Garden, OPE and Paint Supplies saw significantly less promotional support so far this year.
