The National Retail Federation welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision to instruct federal agencies to investigate national trade policies.
David French, NRF executive vice president of government relations, said, “We are pleased with President Trump’s thoughtful decision to initiate a review of current trade policies before implementing significant new tariffs against many of our most important trading partners. The United States absolutely needs a review of our trade relationships to be sure that those relationships are structured to achieve fair, balanced and effective outcomes for American workers and businesses.”
French pointed out, ultimately, “tariffs are taxes paid by Americans, and any new tariff tax increases should be methodically and effectively deployed toward only the most strategic goods. Retailers are committed to working with President Trump and his administration to achieve his campaign promises, including strengthening the U.S. economy, extending his successful Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and ensuring that American families are protected from high inflation.
French said a strategic trade priority assessment is an important step.
“We look forward to working with the president to see that the resulting policy changes are carefully targeted and create an environment that attracts investment and protects critical industries,” French said. “As the leading authority and voice for retail, NRF will continue to advocate for policies and solutions that will enhance America’s competitiveness, boost domestic investment and create jobs.”
In a memorandum directed to agencies across the Federal government, including the United States trade representative, the management and budget director and the secretaries of commerce, defense and the treasury, President Trump stated, “I am establishing a robust and reinvigorated trade policy that promotes investment and productivity, enhances our nation’s industrial and technological advantages, defends our economic and national security, and, above all, benefits American workers, manufacturers, farmers, ranchers, entrepreneurs and businesses.”
