Nordstrom and Macy’s announced they will expand the scope of their off-price operations as they work to attract a new crop of customers, often younger and more value-driven than the retailers’ core department store shoppers.

Expansion of Nordstrom Rack and Macy’s Backstage comes as off-pricers in general have tended to generate solid sales in the current economy. Nordstrom breaks out Rack financial information and, in the latest complete fiscal year, the off-price division’s comparable sales increased 4.7%, compared to 3% for the company’s department stores.

The newly announced Nordstrom Rack locations include a 28,000-square-foot store in Pompano Beach, FL, a 34,000-square-foot store in Suwanee, GA, and a 30,000-square-foot store in Flower Mound, TX, all set to open in the fall offering an ever-changing array of apparel, beauty and home products. Earlier this year, Nordstrom stated that it would open off-price stores in Longmont, CO, Estero, FL, and Lake Grove, NY, also all opening in the fall.

On June 7, Macy’s debuted seven off-price Backstage store-within-a-store operations in locations from Massachusetts to California.

The in-store Backstage shops range from 12,000 to 16,000 square feet, Macy’s pointed out, and offer a one-stop shop for such products as home goods, apparel, beauty items, handbags and luggage.

The planned new Macy’s Backstage locations:

  • Hanover, MA
  • Trumbull, CT
  • Erie, PA
  • Champaign, IL
  • Aurora, CO
  • Las Vegas
  • Culver City, CA
