Costco Wholesale Corp for its fiscal month of January posted net sales of $19.51 billion versus $17.87 billion in the month a year before.
With the effects of changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange excluded, Costco’s comparable stores sales advanced 9.8% year over year. Comps in the United States were ahead 9.2%, comps in Canada were up 12.3%, and comps in other international markets up 10%. E-commerce comps gained 15.2% year over year for the month.
In a conference call, Costco said comp traffic in its U.S. gained 7.1% year over year. U.S. regions generating the best comps were the Midwest, Northwest and San Diego. As for merchandising categories, Nonfoods comps were up in the low double digits year over year with gift cards, toys and seasonal, and jewelry leading. Fresh Foods were up low double digits, while Food & Sundries were up high single digits, the company stated.
