Meijer, after years as a strictly supercenter operation, is developing new store concepts in its home state of Michigan and taking one of the new formats outside the state.
The Fairfax neighborhood of Cleveland is set for the opening of the Fairfax Market by Meijer on January 16, 2024. The 40,000-square-foot market will be part of a mixed-use neighborhood revitalization project developed in partnership with the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic, the Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation and Fairmount Properties. Located in the Cleveland Innovation District, Fairfax Market will contribute to creating a healthier community by addressing food insecurity, supporting economic development and providing a new grocery shopping destination for customers from Fairfax and surrounding communities, Meijer stated.
Fairfax Market will offer an assortment of fresh meat and deli items, fresh produce, fresh bakery goods and Meijer and national brand items. In addition, the store will stock more than 2,000 local products, including Cleveland Cold Brew Coffee, Micah’s Supreme Sauce, PUR Spices, Akron Honey, Lemon Waves and beauty care products from Catlin Naturals, as well as a variety of area beers and wines. It will feature health and beauty care products from local and black, women-owned businesses from the Fairfax neighborhood and Cleveland in general.
Other features of the market:
- A floral and gift shop including PaperCutz Vintage greeting cards and posters with paper flowers from Love, Anji
- A 104-foot international section stocked with products from international and Cleveland producers
- A 54-seat cafe space featuring coffee and sandwiches from Saucy Coffee and sushi from Hissho Sushi
The neighborhood-oriented store concept had its origins in the Detroit area. In 2020, Meijer opened what it called the Woodward Corner Market in suburban Royal Oak, a 41,000-square-foot store offering a wide assortment of fresh and prepared food, groceries and about 2,000 local, artisanal items, as well as an international food aisle that features Middle Eastern, Kosher, Hispanic, European and Asian foods. In 2021, Meijer opened a similar, 42,000-square-foot operation dubbed Rivertown Market in the Detroit neighborhood of the same name.
“Fairfax Market is committed to being more than just a new store,” Fairfax Market store director Alan Jordan said. “We will be an involved partner, investing in the community and supporting local businesses. We look forward to providing convenient access to fresh, quality food and other necessities at good prices, and we can’t wait to welcome our neighbors into the store next month.”
Earlier this year, Meijer debuted a new store concept in two Detroit suburbs. The company developed the Meijer Grocery concept as a convenient alternative to its supercenters for consumers only interested in food and household essentials, the company maintained. At 75,000 to 90,000 square feet, Meijer Grocery stores aren’t small, but they are not as large as the company’s supercenters, which run from 150,000 to 250,000 square feet. Although oriented toward food, beverages and household essentials, Meijer Grocery stores feature significant health and beauty care and pet departments.
Meijer continues to open new supercenters across its core Midwest operational region.
