After leaning toward more food and consumables in its supercenters, Meijer is introducing a new brick-and-mortar store concept designed to provide greater convenience for customers who prefer a simplified shopping experience while supplying communities easier access to fresher foods.
Plans call for the first two Meijer Grocery stores to debut during early 2023, the company noted, with Orion Township and Macomb Township in the company’s home state of Michigan being the initial communities to receive the format.
Meijer Grocery Stores will range in size from 75,000 square feet to 90,000 square feet. They will feature parking wrapped around a single corner entrance that will maximize the number of parking spaces near the door and a condensed, easy-to-navigate floor plan, all to make getting in and out of the store quicker, the company noted. The new store concept is the retailer’s first fresh format since it designed and introduced a neighborhood market small-store vehicle, with the first location opening in August 2018 in Grand Rapids, MI.
Although they won’t altogether step back from general merchandise, the key Meijer Grocery departments will be, Meijer stated, Fresh Produce, Fresh Meat Counter, Bakery, Full-Service Deli, Dry Grocery, Pharmacy, Health & Beauty Care, Baby, Pets and Consumables, and Card and Party/Floral.
“Our customers know they can count on us for the freshest foods and best value, which has always been at the core of what we do at Meijer,” Meijer president and CEO Rick Keyes said in introducing the latest company initiative. “Meijer Grocery will now provide that same combination of freshness and value in a foods-focused format.”
