In time for Earth Day, April 22, and in line with its goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Lowe’s has announced plans to build rooftop solar panel installations at 174 stores and distribution centers across the United States, a total that includes 20 sites already in operation.
Once each site is hooked up, the solar panels will provide about 90% of the energy usage at each location, the company noted.
Through partnerships with DSD Renewables, Greenskies Clean Focus and Infiniti Energy, Lowe’s rooftop solar panel installations power locations throughout California, Illinois and New Jersey. The investments will help Lowe’s reduce its emissions and reach its goal of having its operations powered with 50% renewable energy by 2030.
The rooftop solar deployment across the 174 Lowe’s locations includes:
- 20 stores in New Jersey that are currently operating through Infiniti Energy and panel installations at six additional Garden State Lowe’s stores, each in development and scheduled to begin operation later this year.
- 55 stores in California and 36 stores and three distribution centers in Illinois, planned in partnership with DSD, will begin solar panel construction by the end of 2023.
- 52 stores and two distribution centers in California will initiate construction later this year in partnership with Greenskies Clean Focus.
Lowe’s investment in rooftop solar panels builds on its recent sustainability progress, including achieving its 2025 goal of reducing scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 40% relative to 2016 emissions levels four years early than originally planned, the company pointed out.
