In working to become a circular business by 2030, Ikea U.S. has launched a Buy Back & Resell service as a test at its Conshohocken, PA, store through September 19, with plans already in place for expansion of the initiative.
Ikea U.S. plans to roll out the service to additional select markets across the United States, the company noted, with the goal of making it a permanent service at all Ikea stores across the United States.
The Buy Back & Resell service gives participants in the Ikea Family members program the opportunity to sell back their “gently” used Ikea furniture in exchange for store credit, according to the company. The Buy Back & Resell service is available for fully assembled and functional Ikea furniture, with each item reviewed based on condition, age and functionality. Due to safety concerns, recalled products and certain categories of products, such as chests of drawers, won’t be accepted, Ikea stated.
“At Ikea, we are passionate about making sustainable living easy and affordable for the many, and want to be part of a future that’s better for both people and the planet,” said Jennifer Keesson, country sustainability manager, Ikea U.S., in announcing the test. “We hope the Buy Back & Resell service inspires our customers to live a more sustainable life at home while giving their used furniture another life and a second aim to use only renewable or recycled materials by adapting and finding new sources or developing new materials and is on a journey to find circular solutions for existing and new customers to acquire, care for and pass on IKEA products.”
