Walmart is rolling out a program meant to give shoppers on government assistance a break with its membership program, including perks such as free delivery that can help working parents. The new Walmart+ Assist launches in addition to other programs the company has developed to help lower-income customers.
Government assistance recipients who want to sign up can visit Walmart.com/Plus/Assist to verify eligibility through the SheerID function. Those qualified can then sign up for a Walmart+ Assist membership for $6.47/month or $49/year, Yates noted, and enjoy all the benefits of a Walmart+ membership.
She pointed out that the Walmart+ Assist program isn’t the first the company has initiated to help lower-income customers. In 2019, Walmart became one of the first retailers to participate in the USDA’s SNAP Online Purchase pilot. Now in a multi-year rollout, the program allows customers to pay with their SNAP benefits online, giving them access to conveniences such as pickup and delivery. With the recent addition of Alaska into the program, Walmart became the first retailer to accept SNAP benefits online in all 50 of the United States.
Yates asserted that Walmart+ Assist gives consumers not only provides access to free delivery but the spectrum of Walmart+ benefits including no-additional-feet Paramount and Pluto streaming services access, free shipping for online orders, returns from home, early access to deals, fuel savings and a rewards program. At the same time, members get the full scope of access to Walmart’s everyday low prices, which also can help families stretch their dollars.
