In 2021, 14 of the top 15 retailers in the United States by e-commerce revenue will see year-over-year online growth, according to a study by eMarketer.
Of the top 15, only Best Buy is likely to lose ground, while Etsy, Walmart and Chewy will grow at a faster rate than Amazon, although on a smaller revenue base.
Eight of the 15 top retailers will outpace the U.S. retail e-commerce sales growth rate of 17.9% in 2021, eMarketer forecasts. Most of the eight retailers ahead of the overall growth rate have in common that they are capitalizing on pandemic-induced spending on home improvement, online grocery and pet care, eMarketer asserted, while offering consumers convenient fulfillment options, great prices or both.
According to eMarketer, gains in the top 15 will be:
- Etsy, up 26.9%
- Walmart, up 26.4%
- Chewy, up 25%
- Amazon, up 24.9%
- Costco, up 21.7%
- Apple, up 19.7%
- Wayfair, up 19.4%
- Home Depot, up 18%
- Kroger, up 14.1%
- Macy’s, up 13%
- Target, up 12.5%
- Lowe’s, up 12.1%
- eBay, up 7.8%
- Qurate Retail Group, up 5.7%
- Best Buy, down 3.1%
The top 15 will account for 72.3% of e-commerce revenues in the U.S. this year, up 10.5 percentage points from 2019, largely due to growth at Amazon and Walmart.
The figures represent the gross volume of products or services sold on each company’s website via browser or app, according to eMarketer.
