The Coresight Research Holiday Wrap Up noted store traffic during the holiday season was often up at major retail chains and shopping centers with deals driving most purchase decisions.

The increase in store traffic occurred generally in the discount store and off-price sectors, while department stores saw fewer visits. On the digital side, traditional marketplaces such as eBay and Etsy surrendered some market share to Temu.

Big-ticket items gained, including furniture and appliances, according to Coresight.

Coresight reported a third of consumers spent more in the holiday season, in line with expectations; 30% spent less, just a bit below expectations. The proportion spending the same, at 30% was about four points lower than the expectation

A little more than half of shoppers purchased on Amazon, with Walmart a few points behind, followed more distantly by Target, trailing by about 22 points. The rest of the top 10 consisted of Dollar Tree/Family Dollar, TJX, Costco, Dollar General, Kohl’s, Temu and eBay.

Two in 10 holiday shoppers purchased home goods. Apparel and related products, including footwear and accessories, topped toys/games and holiday decorations in the top three product categories shopped.
