In May, Costco once again managed double-digit comparable sales increases and kept pace with online revenue gains posted this fiscal year.
Company comparable sales, excluding the effects of fuel and foreign exchange rate volatility, increased 11.8% with the United States up 10.7%, Canada up 19.5%, and Other International up 10.1%, according to Costco. Comp traffic was up 6.1% in the U.S. from May 2021. E-commerce gained 7.7% in the month year over year.
Net sales were $18.23 billion, up from $15.59 billion in the month a year earlier, the company reported.
In a conference call, Costco stated that the company’s strongest May sales regions were Texas, the Midwest and San Diego.
In terms of merchandising categories, nonfoods sales advanced in the low double digits in the month year over year with top segments coming in as toys and seasonal, lawn and garden, and automotive. Food and Sundries gained in the low double digits, and Fresh Food grew in the high single digits versus May 2021
Costco operates 830 warehouse stores, including 574 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 105 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 30 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 16 in Korea, 14 in Taiwan, 13 in Australia, four in Spain, two each in France and China, and one in Iceland. Costco also operates e-commerce websites in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia.
