Costco Wholesale Corp. posted net sales in June of $22.86 billion, up from $22.78 billion last year despite lagging nonfoods sales.
With the effects of gasoline and foreign exchange volatility removed, Costco stated, comparable sales in June gained 2% in the United States, 6.5% in Canada, 5.1% in other international markets and 3% for the company overall. E-commerce comps were down 0.4%.
Costco reported in a conference call that comp traffic gained 3.6% in the U.S. Strongest comps sales regions in the U.S. were the Northeast, Northwest and Southeast. As for merchandising categories, nonfoods comps were down in the low single digits. Tires, health and beauty, and apparel were the strongest segments. Food and sundries sales were up in the high single digits, and fresh foods were up in the mid single digits.
