As it kept momentum going, Costco enjoyed double-digit comparable sales in June which included an extra sales day.
Sans fuel and foreign exchange effects, comparable sales increased 13% in June versus the year-previous month, the company stated, with clubs in the United States up 13.2%, those in Canada up 13.7% and those in other international countries up 11.9%. E-commerce comps gained 8.3% in June year over year.
Overall, June sales increased 20.4% to $22.78 billion versus the year-prior month, Costco reported.
In a conference call, a Costco spokesperson stated that U.S. customer traffic gained 9% versus the year-before June. The strongest regions in the United States were the Midwest, San Diego and Texas. In terms of merchandise categories, Non-Foods gained just under 10% in the month year over year with the strongest results in garden, toys and seasonal, tires, and automotive. Food & Sundries comps gained in the mid-teens, and Fresh Food sales increased in the high single digits versus June 2021.
Costco’s five-week June retail month had one additional shopping day in the U.S. versus the year-earlier month due to the timing of Independence Day. This benefited company total and comparable sales by about 2%, and U.S. total and comparable sales by about 3%.
Costco operates 833 warehouse clubs, including 574 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 107 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 31 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 16 in Korea, 14 in Taiwan, 13 in Australia, four in Spain, two each in France and China, and one in Iceland. Costco also operates e-commerce websites in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia.
