Boscov’s Touts Gift Registries in Opening Its First West Virginia Store

Boscov’s is opening its 50th department store, the company’s first in West Virginia, and its chairman and CEO made a YouTube video to welcome new customers.

In the video, Jim Boscov (pictured above), CEO and chairman of the Reading, PA-based company, points out that Boscov’s is the largest chain of family-owned department stores in the United States and that contiguous expansion brought it to West Virginia.

The new store is slated for the Meadowbrook Mall in Bridgeport, WV. According to the Meadowbrook Mall, the store will come in at about 151,000 square feet and open in the fall.

Boscov narrates a trip through one of the company’s already operating department stores to give viewers who might not be familiar with the operation a sense of what it’s about. A major point he makes is that Boscov’s offers departments that many rival retailers lack today, including a toy department that operates all year round, and a deeper selection of products within major categories. In fact, Boscov used coffee makers as an example of how the company provides more choices. Boscov puts home on the same footing as apparel in its department stores and underscores the selection available.

“Within each department, you’ll find a much wider selection of products,” he said. “For example, in most stores, if you are looking at coffee makers, you’ll find a selection of five, six, maybe seven, but when you come to Boscov’s you’re going to find 18, 19 or 20. It’s everything for the home and for everyone in the family.

Boscov also touted the work of the company’s buyers in finding quality products the stores could offer at a good value, and knowledgeable salespeople who are on the floor ready to help shoppers. He also pointed to Boscov’s retaining traditional services such as free layaway and military discounts while developing the latest in conveniences such as buy online and pick up either in-store or curbside. In addition, Boscov highlighted the stores’ registries and pointed to in-store registry kiosks available for customer convenience. Of course, Boscov’s customers can work with any of its registries, which include Wedding Registry, Baby Registry, Gift List, Birthday, Other Occasion, Cosmetics and Nonprofit/Organization, via laptop, tablet or smartphone. Easy returns were also part of Boscov’s pitch.
