Aldi plans to open more than 225 new stores through 2025 in the next phase of its five-year U.S. growth strategy.
The 225 store openings will be the most Aldi has totaled in a single year in its nearly 50-year history in the United States, the company reported . The new stores will open through a combination of organic growth and the conversion of the select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format. The company said it will convert approximately 220 of the Winn-Dixie stores it acquired from Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027.
Aldi is selling the 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores it isn’t converting to a consortium that includes C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership and private investors. The transaction will allow Aldi to create a focused conversion portfolio in the Southeast as it progresses its expansion plans across the U.S.
The grand-opening efforts for the converted former Winn Dixie and Harveys stores have begun, with approximately 100 converted locations reemerging as Aldi stores by the end of 2025.
In addition to its southeast expansion and conversion efforts, Aldi will add to its established footprint in the Northeast and Midwest regions while growing its presence in the West with more stores in Southern California and Arizona. Aldi also plans to enter new western communities including Las Vegas, the company maintained.
“When we announced our acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, we shared that we intended for a meaningful number of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to continue to operate, and we’re delivering on that promise while also supporting Aldi growth,” said Aldi CEO Jason Hart. “Over the last year, we’ve seen firsthand how C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers and their teams have continued to deliver great quality, service and value to their customers, and we are confident they will lead the company successfully into its next chapter. Converting the remaining locations to the Aldi format is critically important to our nationwide commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with quality groceries for less.”
In 2024, Aldi opened nearly 120 stores, bringing its store count to more than 2,400 and solidifying its position as the third-largest grocery chain by store count in the U.S., the company said.
