Macy’s has announced the launch of an enterprise-wide social purpose platform – Mission Every One – developed to build on the company’s heritage of corporate citizenship and to promote positive societal change.
With Mission Every One, Macy’s stated that the company is committing to leveraging its resources, talent and scale to create a brighter future with representation for all. The social purpose platform is built on three pillars – people, communities and planet – and will direct $5 billion of the company’s spend, scaling through 2025, to the partners, products, people and programs that help create a more equitable and sustainable future.
The people portion of the commitment includes the initiative Designing a More Inclusive Future of Style, which includes increasing Macy’s investment in underrepresented designers, brands and business partners, products, and service providers across its namesake and Bloomingdale’s banners to amplify diverse voices, create more choices and expand opportunities for colleagues, partners and communities, the company noted. Macy’s will continue supporting The Workshop at Macy’s, what the retailer called the longest-running retail development program for underrepresented suppliers and one that has helped grow more than 175 diverse and women-owned businesses since 2011. To help customers access more sustainable products, Macy’s will increase its digital assortment by 5,000 product pages on the macys.com sustainability site from all product categories. This will go beyond third-party certification to include sustainable innovations, specifically in the area of circular solutions, as the company prioritizes opportunities that extend the life of a product.
The company reported it also is making efforts to diversify leadership, fund colleague education, aid human rights and youth well-being organizations, and increase pay, which it has done with a move to raise the base salary to $15 an hour.
“Macy’s, Inc. has long been a strong partner to the local communities in which we operate,” said Jeff Gennette, Macy’s chairman and CEO. “But today, as all stakeholders expect more of corporations – and of us – we are taking steps to strengthen how our work contributes to the common good. We are transforming our business from a position of legacy to one of leadership. In this evolution, how we run the business is as important as what we sell. As part of our transformation, we seized the opportunity to create a social purpose platform that leverages our scale, unique strengths and culture to create more meaningful change in the world. Mission Every One will be an essential part of how we operate and the decisions that we make as a business. We believe that when our business enables everyone to stand in their truth and have a seat at the table, they realize their full potential, which unlocks innovation and progress for all.”
